In The Church Of The Poisoned Mind

cynic
This is going to sound like a very whiny, self pitying post, but it isn't. It's a heartfelt plea for help and advice, but I'll hide it under a cut in case you dont want to view my whinging ;)

How do you motivate yourself to do better?

There isn't much I feel I do well, but there are some things I feel I am naturally talented at. Web design, cooking, photography, music composing. Everyone is naturally talented at some things, those are just what I feel I am good at.

Problem is I'm incredibly lazy. I want to be a lot better at all of those, but I can't motivate myself to do the necessary work. I feel I should just be naturally better and not have to put the work in.

And I hate that about myself, but there you go.

So, how do I motivate myself to do the work?
Any ideas?

my advice..Find the one thing that you enjoy....and just do that one thing...

Like in photography...think of something in the house that you think would be a good subject, then get off the couch and do it..then think again...think your way out the house and up and around the town. Then, start on something else...

atleast that I what I try to do, except I really dont find that I'm talented at anything...it is really hard for me.

I don't really have much advice, as I"m the same exact way really. :/ Just thought I'd point out you're not alone, and that you can only take one day at a time, that's really all you can do when in a motivational funk of sorts.

I once listened to a "motivational" speaker whose only worthwhile statement was: "You can only be motivated by yourself." When you're already feeling low, that precious motivation can be really hard to find.

You and I are on similar wavelengths, I think. I'm definitely in a pretty low place, and motivation figures into my funk, too.

I recommend you take solace and inspiration from something familiar, something comfortable. I'm often in such a hurry to "create" something new that I neglect to look at what I already have.

I know I can only concentrate on one thing at once...so pick one thing which you really want to do first - I am sure one appeals more than the others?

You may find though that something with an end rather than just say grabbing your camera and going for a wander e.g. a course / evening may motivate you more especially if you are paying for it? It means you would have a set time to be there, people who expect you to be there, and you know it only lasts for x amount of time and you should see progress or know what you have achieved at the end of it. There must be evening classes for all the courses you mention. Maybe start with a day course? Or a really short one?

You did really well sticking at your International Computer Driving Licence course....I was surprised to be honest how motivated you were. I know if you find something which grabs you, that you CAN be motivated.......you just need to get past getting all the information and ACTUALLY sign up for something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other factor - as you well know - is to have someone who is interested in what you are doing and who is willing to give you support, allow you to talk about what you are doing, encourage you to keep going and kick you hard when you need it most!!!!!! I know you still do that for me when I need it....and you know where I am if you think I can do the same for you??

*big hugs and a big kick up the arse to find something interesting and sign up for it!!*

I look forward to hearing what you have chosen!!

Good job I am interested in what you are doing and going to be going much the same courses then eh? We can motivate each other, support each other and study together too! And good job I am on my way over with all these course details you asked me to get for us eh?

And armed with all the information for your CV, we should be able to get it together as well this weekend to get a new job sorted out for you too! :-)

You just need to wait a couple of hours and your personal arse-kicker will be there!

*hugs*

Motivation
Sounds like lemming has it all sorted for you David, Make sure you tell her how much you apprciate her when she gets there. :o)

As for motivation i can only say what everyone else said really, Pick just one think and focus on that....too many things at once will have you pondering too much on what to do next.

The only other thing that works for me is LISTS....yeah yeah i know its boring but if you write a list of say for example Photos you want to take then you can cross them off as you achieve them. Maybe I,m sad really but i love getting close to the end of the list i get all excited about finishing it.......

Ok Ok i know IT IS sad really but it works for me.

Ok i,m off to write my list of jobs for next week one of which will be the same as yours GET A NEW BLOODY JOB as i,m fed up of mine

Hope you have a fab weekend

Love Michelle

I agree with the other people here apart from the fact that paying for something does not motivate me to do it.

I have numerous books I intend to read sometime, and courses that I have started and not finished due to life influences and general procrastination.

How far did you get on the weekend?
